Article from Jackson County Floridan regarding efforts of Miss NWFL, Morgan Mount and her mother Robin to support a close friend in need...

Many hopeful hearts are going out to Brandi Purvis of Cottondale this week, as she endures yet another bump in the road after about a year of tough times.
After the death of her grandmother and caretaker in May, Purvis was diagnosed that August with having gastrointestinal stromal tumors. These are considered fairly rare tumors of the GI tract.
Following the diagnosis, Purvis underwent major surgery, removing more than a third of her stomach.
The 20-year-old is currently juggling work, school and doctor visits all on her own, without the support of any family.
Purvis’ grandmother was the last of her family around to support her, with the exception of Purvis’ brother, who is currently away serving in the military.
Purvis works full-time at the Winn Dixie in Marianna, as well as attending Chipola College as a full-time student working towards her associate’s degree.
While attempting to juggle all this on her own, she recently received more bad news. Doctors now have found 23 more tumors on her liver.
With this discovery, Purvis has been recommended to visit the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa within the next week for further review.
Although Purvis has health insurance, the cost associated with these specialized doctor visits and various medicines is becoming a burden much too hard for a young girl to bear.
“Life is hard enough at 20,” said Robin Mount, mother of Purvis’ best friend Morgan. “Our hearts go out to her, and we will do what ever is necessary to make sure she receives everything she needs.”
Mount has participated in many efforts over the past year to help Purvis offset the monetary burden associated with her health condition.
In November, Mount helped organize a fundraiser with support from Winn Dixie, called “Tips for Tiaras.”
Local beauty queens showed their support by bagging customer’s groceries for tips, and turning over all the proceeds to Purvis to help offset medical costs.
The event was so successful Winn Dixie also did one in December, and plans to do one this month as well.
Now, with Purvis’ upcoming visit to Tampa, Mount decided it was time to step it up a notch.
On Feb. 20, Mount and a few local beauticians are getting together to hold another fundraiser on Purvis’ behalf called “Haircuts for Hope.”
The event will be held at Allure, inside of Shore Tan on Lafayette Street in Marianna.
An Allure stylist and several beauticians from other salons will be cutting children’s hair for $10, and adults for $15 with all the money collected going to Purvis.
A few of the participating hairstylists are friends of Purvis from Cottondale High School.
Mount says she plans on doing as much advertising for this event as possible, with plans to pass out flyers and pay for a radio spot.
“Brandi is just the sweetest girl you’ll ever meet, and she needs our help,” Mount said.
Purvis expressed her gratitude for Mount and all her efforts in a phone interview Wednesday.
“Mrs. Robin has been like a second mother to me, I am just so thankful for everything she’s done for me,” Purvis said. “And to everyone else for being so supportive.”
Purvis’ attitude remains positive, and she says she plans to finish up at Chipola and continue on through graduate school to get her master’s degree in mathematics. Purvis hopes to teach math at Florida State University one day.
